I wonder if you can help me – I wanting a data recovery specialist in Belfast that can recover the files from my hard drive. Here’s what has happened:

Bought a new 2TB WD external harddrive a few months back, and it’s been fine until the other day where I decided to copy over a terrabyte of music program files (properllerhead Reason) from a Seagate NTFS harddrive to it. The transfer started fine, and was going to take 6 hours, so I left it alone. Then at some point I had to move the Macbook Pro, so carefully did so with the harddrives sat on top of it so they weren’t moved unncessarily. I will mention that I’ve had some issues with the Segate drive, but as you’ll see from what I’m going to tell you it seems unlikely that it has caused the problem itself. Anyone, hours later when I figured the transfer would be complete I see an error message along the lines of ‘such and such a file couldn’t be copied because of a read error’. So the transfer was cancelled. All the files before that one had copied.

Now I try to look at my WD hardrdrives contents and weird things start happening – I can’t access or open files, even though they are listed. I try to unmount the disk – it won’t. I check and shut all apps and programs that might be using it, to no avail (including shutting some hidden processes in activity monitor). It still won’t eject. I turn my mac off and on again. Now the harddisk shows up, but folders are greyed out, and I can’t even open them. Checking the ‘my info’ data on the drive shows that it’s full of all my data still…but for some reason something odd is going on with the drive. I also then notice a strange sound coming from the drive, that was not there before this happened. A regular ‘blip’ type sound – not a click, but a sharp, quick buzz sound, at regular though fairly spaced intervals every few seconds – i.e not quick clicking, or buzzing. It blips intermittently like this for a while as it trys and mostly fails to read data (some files open, and can be copied…but most can’t). Then the sound eventually stops, as if the drive gave up. It’s mounted, I can see the data, but 90% of it shows an error message (-36) when I try and copy it to back it up. This is hugely important data to me, as a Belfast musician – this is all my work for months. I never expected to get a problem with such a new harddrive, so haven’t backed up what I’d saved to it for the last three months. Which is a lot of stuff.

Just to reiterate – it mounts, slowly, makes an intermittent blip sound for a minute or two, then stops. The data shows up (although oddly not all the time – sometimes folders are missing), but is largely inaccessible. I managed to start a copy of a large amount of the data I consider the most important to another drive, but the ‘time remaining’ seemed ridiculous, as if the drive is now massively slow, and within a minute or two I got the ‘read error’ message that meant the transfer stopped. Checking the destination folder, a few files had successfully copied. I have zero idea what’s going on here. There’s a chance I may have dropped the drive last week, but I can’t quite recall. I do seem to remember that happening, but can’t quite recall. It would of only been a minor knock.

Like I said, this is hugely important data to me. And it would seem like it’s all there, but there appears to be a physical problem with the disk. Looking online, maybe a stuck head. But it’s strange how it can sometimes read the data, but not copy it or open all of it. I can bring the hard drive to you, I believe you are located in Belfast?

Broken hard drive
What happened, I suspect, is that the disk was unsafely dismounted while it was still being read when I connected it. It is now broken, it could be a mechanical failure, I am not sure. In any event, the situation now is that when I try to connect it to the computer, the OS does not seem to read it and does not recognise its existence. (This happens both with PC and with Mac computers.) The disk itself makes all the “right” noises but the light indicator on the side that usually only flashes is now on continuously.

London University Recovery
I work at University College London, and I asked our IT specialist to take a look at it. However, they have only been able to recover a small proportion of the files, and they’re not 100% sure what exactly is wrong with the drive. I was wondering if you could perhaps look into it, given your experience.

Retrieve footage from CCTV

I need to talk to you about a CCTV issue.
I tried to retrieve footage on my 16 channel NVR, which had a 1TB sata drive, which at the time recorded 8 IP cams. I found that I could go back to footage from 16th Oct.
I actually need footage of the 15th Oct.
Would the footage be irretrievable ? It is most likely overwritten but I’m hoping that maybe the NVR would start to overrwrite different parts of the HD and thus it there is a likelihood that it is retrievable?
The NVR is a cheap unbranded made in China 16 channel NVR.

No files on G-Raid Thunderbolt

G-Technology G-Raid Thunderbolt Drive is recognised, but you cannot see any files as it just keeps loading. The drive then starts to crash finder, which it continues doing until you unplug it. You sometimes might have to restart the mac to get it working normally. It sounds as if the disk inside the drive is trying to start spinning but cannot.

SATA hard drive whirring and buzzing

I work in IT and I have a Customer’s SATA Laptop Hard Drive that they require accessing (If Possible) I have removed the hard drive from the Laptop and have put it into an external Hard Drive Caddy and is just whirring and buzzing every few seconds. It isn’t being recognized by Explorer or by any file recovery software. Could you quote on a possible repair and recovery please?

Android 6.0 All the text messages were deleted about 18 months ago when the phone was replaced and sim removed so hasent been used since apart from browsing for a month. A couple years ago I sent my hard drive off to be recovered but it was unsuccessful. I got a long and detailed report on why. I now have a new hard drive that I need the files retrieving from. Am I able to drop it off at your offices? I live close to Chiswick.

My external harddrive has stopped working. No light once connected to usb port. Have tried different ports and cables. The device is making a loud clicking sound when it is plugged in. Windows will not detect it.

We have a Seagate Backup Plus Slim portable drive 1TB, Model: SRD00F. All was going well when the house fuse tripped out. I traced the fault back to the Seagate unit that had stopped working. I work near your data recovery offices in Manchester and Birmingham and have a Seagate Barracuda 1 Terabyte hard disk with firmware: LC15. I bought this a few years ago and after some time is broke down.
The hard disk still runs however it is impossible to read any information from it. From the noise it creates I believe the reader or the reader head is broken but the disk itself may be in relatively good condition.
I have an exact same seagate barracude 1 terabyte disk i bought along with this one that still works. I would not mind using the reader of that disk on the broken one.
The disk contains some extremely important information for me and it is vital that the information can be extracted (I am aware no-one can give me 100% guarantee). I also ask if it possible for me to be there in person as this recovery happens. ,
My hard drive has been damaged by water and it’s not working anymore. It was inside a Mac Book Pro 2012. It has been removed by a specialist in the Apple Store, but they don’t do recovery of it. I bought a case to try it in another laptop, but it doesn’t work. It’s a 256 Gb, not completely full.

My mother recently had her laptop fail after allowing a Windows 10 update.
We thought we had been making regular backups to a separate hard drive, but these don’t seem to have been working for a year or so.
We took the machine to a local company in Manchester, who diagnosed that they needed to completely reinstall Windows 10.
Now we can’t find any of the old files since 2016.

Recently my PC started running slow so I thought I would get more RAM (from 8Gb to 16Gb).
This didn’t really solve the issue.
Last week my PC was file transferring and came up with an error basically saving the destination drive wasn’t there.
This was my internal data drive (Seagate 1Tb Barracuda ST1000DM003) and I am in Manchester
With the drive still connected to the motherboard the system takes a good 10mins to get to desktop.
When it is removed my PC boot up in less than a minute.
2/10 times it can be seen as local drive G but cannot be accessed. I managed to see it in the management window as a RAW format drive (was NTFS).
I have had no luck with data recovery software as the drive is never seen/found.

I knocked my Seagate ST1000DM003 expansion over from upright to horizontal and it was on carpet so I cant understand why it has stopped working but it has. Why is bad sector/track remapping a limited process consuming a pool of spare sectors/tracks?
Why doesn’t the firmware/ software start to use the storage area on the disk to remap at the expense of file data lost? ie. let the linked lists grow until no useful free storage area is available, so, the disk capacity reduces over time. As the lists grow they can be extended to free areas on the disc. My Seagate Drive was dropped and now making clicking sound of death.

The USB jack has come off the main Seagate USB circuit; the pins on the jack have removed the copper from the circuit track, so makes it difficult to reconnect the USB jack. I am an apprentice who has a large sum of work documents on that USB stick, that I could really do with retrieving. I just wonder if this is a problem that you are aware of and can repair. Description of Problem not working it has beed dropped

The laptop and the applicable hard drive are old and have been unused since 2012. Back then, the hard drive became unaccessible, which caused me to replace the laptop (Macbook).
The issue why the hard drive became unaccessible was never discovered. So my question is if you can restore the files on this hard drive.

I formatted by mistake from the camera, since then I have not more used the SD card. It is a 32 GB lexar SD card. It contains about 35-50 minutes of video interview plus some photos.

The harddrive in question is about two years old from a reputable company in Northamptonshire. My external harddrive wire was replaced as it was no longer connecting to the computer. From this moment on the harddrive would occasionally have errors appearing saying ‘unable to read disk’.
