Can’t Load / Stopped Working

Monday, April 24th, 2017

I have a sandisk 32gb drive pen, part of the internal plastic assembly has become dislodged back inside the metal casing which means I can’t insert it into a usb port. Would you assist with this and, if so, could you please quote me a price?

I have a Mac. Can’t load operating system, but drive still makes noise for the first few seconds of booting, then clicking noise stopps, but platter is still spinning.

I have a WD “MyCloud” type external hard drive which is out of warranty and has stopped working. I need the data which is on the drive recovered. Am happy to drop this off at your Lombard Street office (I work nearby). Let me know what I should do.

My seagate 1tb external hard drive, I have arrwmpted to plug it in to my laptop and work desktop.
The light comes on however it will not show up on the computer.

My external hard drive has stopped working I am now unable to access any data on it. It is a Cajie [ I think they mean LaCie ] hard drive – with mostly photos and videos on it.

I have a corrupted hard-drive which has been broken for 3 years. I sent it to a data recovery company and they weren’t able to fix it. However, they offered a physical action and I didn’t accept. I live in London and I can bring the drive over.

My USB was connected to my laptop, and I accidentally knocked it off the sofa, breaking my USB. The tip is now detached from the rest of the drive, but the green part (don’t know the lingo, sorry) looks fine. All my university coursework is on there and I desperately need my files back. 🙁 Is there anyway you could fix it?

Old laptop runs some very old hardware. No longer supported. Customer wants data recovering to a new (identical) hard drive that will go back in the laptop so it’ll continue to work

Laptop Drives not working

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

My laptop fell to the floor after I had just put the lid down and it was going to sleep. Proceeded to try and login and it freezes on the loading screen for ages and doesn’t do anything. Run the diagnostics, the smart scan hard drive has passed but the short DST hard drive test has failed. Tried automatic repair and it says that the computer cannot be repaired with this link in the error message C:\\WINDOWS\system32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
Then I tried to restore it to the point my computer suggested, it starts up again, but never gets past the loading screen.

The hard drive is an iomega 750GB. It was knocked off a shelf and now the power comes on but it will not connect to laptop. It sounds like its trying to start up but keeps failing.

My hard drive was dropped and now it is no longer detected and makes a buzzing noise when connected.

I have a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive which I haven’t used for many years. I am aware that the drive will not work on later versions of Windows, and have therefore tried to use it on an old Windows XP desktop computer. The drive is showing as not fully installing and therefore unable to be accessed. The indicator light on the drive goes from bright, to dull, to off as it flashes – I am not sure if this is how it used to flash or not. Could the data on this drive be retrieved?

I own an iPod Classic – It’s over 8 years old (I think) – All my music ended up being stored on this (after downloading CD’s onto old PC laptop which is long gone) – I’m trying to retrieve the music and know not to restore as this will delete music stored – Problem is iPod now saying need to restore to access – Can you help? Willing to pay as really don’t want to lose music – Thank you (I am based in Wimbledon)

3tb hard drive. I have opened to take a look and can see a clear scratch.
Just need image files and Lightroom backup files recovered – all else not required or wanted!
Is this a possibility and how much?

Various Data Recovery Enquiries

Thursday, January 26th, 2017

Here’s a selection of some of the latest problems we’ve been asked to look at. As hard drive recovery specialists we can often recover the data from systems when you’ve given up hope. Our friends at Data Recovery Tips have some great online advice about hard drive recovery that we can recommend should be get into problems with a computer disk!

We have a RAID array with 8 hard drives, three drives have failed, what are the chances of any data recovery and could you give a rough estimate of cost? Thanks

My son has a seagate expansion portable drive on which he has a number of downloaded x box games on for his x box one console, when it was turned on last night the x box would start up and then turn off, we noticed that it would repeatedly go off and on when the hard drive was plugged into the console and that the console would work fine by itself if the drive wasn’t attached. Can you help as obviously this has caused the end of the world with the potential loss of progress on his games!

access denied- busted hard drive hddMy dad accidentally deleted my pictures off my external hard drive a while back but i havent used it since, would I be able to get them back? Also how much does it cost

iMac hard drive was clicking on start up and couldn’t be found and apple support said it has to be replaced. I need my data recovered first – especially photos – which I don’t have backed up. Its an iMac 27inch from 2011. 1TB hard drive.

Hi – I have an LTO backup disk with an SQL server database on it. We don’t have facilities to read it here, so I need to get it restored onto a server to enable access to it and put it onto another medium. Is that a service you would offer?

The USB port on the external hard drive has come away from the circuit board. Can you glue/solider back on?
Seagate 1TB portable hard drive.
The hard drive or its files will not show up on any laptop or computer.
The light is flashing and the hard drive whirs but that is it. It is said to be ‘unavailable’ when located in the devices folder.

Hello, my portable hard drive Free Agent GoFlex is broken, computers does not see it. How much will be the recovery of data?

Mechanical Fault on HDD.

I have a western digital 2TB hard drive with five years worth of footage that i desperately need back as some of the videos were going to be used for my dissertation, it started off just not connecting through the cable, so i left the hard drive back home with my friend to use an adapter to get the footage back and copy it over. However, when he went to copy the data to a new drive, it has started making a ticking noise and not showing up on any machine that he has tried. Is there anything you could do to help with this issue and would you be able to provide a quote/estimate of how much it’d be?

It is a 2TB Seagate Barracuda, roughly 4 years old. It stopped working completely and is not being seen in Disk Management. When it boots there is a squeaky sound.

HDD’s Broken

Sunday, January 8th, 2017

I’ve received a large number of broken hard drives (HDD’s) lately and I sent them off to http://www.datlabsdatarecovery.co.uk/ to have the data recovered from them. I have a Seagate freeagent desktop external hard drive. This is suddenly longer recognised by desktop computer. I plugged it into my home laptop with same result. The Seagate box contains family photos and personal docs going back many years. I am hoping there’s a chance of retrieving these with your help? I live in Plymouth, Devon (120 miles from your Bristol office). Is this a problem?

I’m having trouble with a 2TB SATA external drive. The drive stopped working while attached to my computer. It is formatted MS-DOS. The drive spins up, but makes a quiet clicking noise. I’ve taken it from the enclosure and put it in another SATA enclosure and the same happens. I guess that means it’s a mechanical failure inside the drive, or on the board. It has some important data I would like to retrieve. Any chance you could give me a quote?

We have an MSA 2000 with two x 6 disk RAID5 volumes containing a number of VMware VMs. It is reporting multiple disk failures after a power cut.
We have a backup of the VMs via Backup Exec but the database is on a VM which is now unavailable because of the disk failures in the SAN.
We’re working on a workaround but as a plan b I wondered whether this is something you might be able to assist with.
We open for business again on 3rd Jan and must be fully operational.

Seagate external hardrive makes beeping noise and is not recognisable on my mac. Stopped working after I dropped it on the carpet from waist height. Power cable and transformer are working but hard drive doesn’t turn on so unable to access data. My EHD can’t connect to computer. Microsoft Help states possible malfunction. Done some research and could be down to overheating as the drive is stored inside a small drawer. Would appreciate if you could help me out.

I have a very old ibook G4 that will not start. Sometimes nothing happens when I switch it on but occasionally a blank blue screen will come on but nothing else happens.
I have photos on the machine that i would like to recover.
Can you estimate the cost of recovering photos from the laptop?

Some Phone and Hard Drive Enquiries

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

This post is all about the topic of data recovery. Data recovery is what we need when our electronic devices become inaccessible and we need to retrieve the data that is on them. Data recovery usually involves the repair of the device (e.g.. hard drive or phone), before the data is recovered from it.

Toshiba usb portable hard drive. the socket has broken off the small mother board and fallen in to the casing. The hardrive itself should be functioning.if you connect to it directly. We need to remove the data from it.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and factory reset has been done on it. I would like to recover the photos from the phone.

A phone data retrieval service I can recommend is http://phone-recovery.pen.io/

I would like to access the data and photos from two of my old laptops that have been broken a few years. Could you advise how much it’s likely to cost.

Fujitsu M2681SAMI have a Fujitsu M2681SAM 264mb 3.5, 50 pin SCSI LP Hard Drive out of a piece of outputting equipment for the printing industry. I can’t get the imagesetter to load the info off the H/drive and not sure if it’s the CPU board or the H/drive. I was looking to have the H/Drive tested, and the information transferred to another H/drive of which I could locate and supply if needed. I am based in North Birmingham. What help can you offer and what sort of costs would be involved.
If you could contact me with any information that would be appreciated.

i was wiping my laptop as i was giving it to a family member. http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/how-reset-macbook-air-pro-imac-restore-your-mac-original-factory-settings-macos-3494564/
i used this guide to help. i had important University documents on the desktop. i hope to recover.
please do not call me if your services are costing over £400 like other competitors.

I recently took out and cleaned my five year old laptop and placed everything back the way it was. Long story short it would not boot I ran a start up test to see why and it froze. The computer nor the drive is responsive even when I put the drive in a working computer or vise versa

Computing Problems – November 2016

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

My Sony Vaio laptop turns on saying the hard disk/drive was not detected. I do not know why as last time I used it worked perfectly fine. Please get in touch asap via email. I am free on Monday 31st so I can drop it then.

Seagate "Backup Plus" drivesI have an iPhone that is stuck on the Apple logo and won’t reboot or enter recovery mode so as to allow recovery of files. It is an iPhone 4S. I live in Switzerland. Do you offer a service whereby I could send the unit to you (Fedex) for you to do a diagnostic test? If so, could you send me a list of prices, or at least the price for a diagnostic test.
In this case, I’d be seeking to recover the photo files and the voice memorandum file in the iPhone dictaphone utility.

A seagate external hard drive is not responding when connected. Need to recover the data in the hard drive. Could you please give me a quote for this service. I am based in London.

About 27gb of photos and videos lost, from Europe trip between April and June 2016, stored on microsd card within Motorola G3 phone. Event occurrence in end June: Dropped the Android phone from bedside table height while connected for charging, and connected to wifi, onto soft carpeted floor. Microsd card malfunction possibly due to potential unseen/unaccepted Android system update, possibly initiated by being connected to wifi after a long time, or by the drop with charge (causing a potential short circuit).

I have a Toshiba External hard drive which doesn’t seem to be working, it turns on but doesn’t boot properly or appear on my computer. I’ve tried different power cables and USB cables but they don’t work. It usually makes a fast clicking noise and the light on the front turns blue but it’s staying red and not making the noise any more. Any ideas what’s happened? I haven’t dropped it or.moved it at all it just suddenly started doing his.

Getting Data Back

Get Back CCTV Image Data

Question: “We have a criminal case and we have a major problem. We have a digital cctv recorder. The footage we needed was recorded on the 2 of September when I called the engineer to tape the footage it said we could no longer go back to that date. Is there anyway we can retrieve that footage? I would greatly appreciate it. I’m feeling so stressed about this hopefully you can help.”

Answer: The likelihood of recovering data from CCTV recorders like this is very slim. This is because this equipment records on a continuous loop, continually overwriting the older data on the hard drive. In this case I believe the data you want to recover has been completely overwritten. This is common thing. If you have data from a CCTV system that you want saved its important to switch the CCTV recorder off so that it can’t overwrite any of the recordings you want back.

500GB Harddrive Not Appearing

Question: Have a seagate 500GB harddrive, used it a week ago and was perfectly fine. Tried to plug it in yesterday however nothing appeared on my Mac. Tried a windows and still the same. Windows makes sound when plug in. The light appears on device then flashes for a bit and then stops and goes back to just the light. It makes a heart beat type of sound when plugged in, such as it’s trying to do something but keeps getting caught. Really need the data on the device.

Transcend Store Jet harddrive

A 1TB Transcend Store Jet hard drive

Answer: The noise your Windows system makes when you plug your hard drive in is that of a USB device being recognised. There’s a subtle difference here – the noise is NOT your hard drive being recognised, rather it’s only the USB interface being recognised. I therefore suspect that you have a harddrive problem. The heart beat sound you mention when the harddrive is connected is probably similar to the repetitive clicking sound that most people report when their hard drive does not appear. This sound indicates a serious hard drive problem, and getting the data back from these fault requires engaging a skilful data recovery company who will be able to extract the data from the harddrive.

Transcend StoreJet Stopped Working

Question: My external hard drive (1TB Transcend StoreJet) has recently stopped working. Every time I plug it in to a computer it turns on, but says drivers have failed to install and thus it can’t be accessed.
I wanted to know how long does it normally take for you to examine a hard drive and recover data?
Please email me back. Your help is greatly appreciated.

Answer: This could be a problem with the drivers rather than a problem with the external hard drive. My first recommendation would be to plug the hard drive into a Mac and see what happens. Mac’s don’t use drivers as such and therefore plugging to device into a Mac should get past this problem. If the hard drive still fails to show up then you will have a faulty hard drive. Don’t worry if that hard drive shows up and you are unable to read it. Incompatabilites between Windows and Mac systems exist and you might not be able to read the data from the hard drive BUT you it will show up on the system.

Questions about Broken Hard Drives

Friday, September 23rd, 2016

In this post we look at three example hard drive problems and give recommendations on identifying the problem and applying the solution to extract the data from the hard drive.

Is Hard Drive Repair Worth It ?
My external hard drive is clicking and not connecting to my macbook so I know it is broken, I do not want a data recovery if possible to avoid it as I’m just wanting the hard drive fixed. I am wondering if you’s fix external hard drives? Thank you.

It’s not really financially worth fixing a hard drive. As hard drives are so cheap to buy, it works out more expensive to fix them than it would be to buy a brand new one. So, if you don’t need to data recovering from your busted hard drive, just buy a new one instead. You’ll get a warranty with it too.

Hard Drive Not Being Found
I have a Seagate 1gb usb hard drive. The light is still lit up when connected to computer, I have brought a new lead just in case it was that, unfortunately it is not being found on any computer. What do I need to do to get the drive to work?

Buying a new lead was a good idea as sometimes that’s all the problem is. Now that you’ve done that and eliminated the lead it’s worth eliminating the external case. Remove the hard drive from the casing and hook it us directly to your computer using a USB to SATA cable. If that works then obviously the case is at fault. If the hard drive is still not being found then the conclusion is that there is a fault on the hard drive. There are some things you can do yourself to try and repaid your hard drive – go and take a look at the http://www.recover-deleted-data.co.uk/ web resource for some good tips of getting the information of off broken hard drives.

Getting the Data off a Packard Bell
I would like quote for the cost of recovering data off a Packard Bell Store & Save hard disk drive Model No H2D2U2 6948820100, particularly the family photos.

You don’t actually say what the failure with your hard drive actually is. Can you provide any more information ? In the above question I mention the Recover Deleted Data web resource – I recommend that you take a look at this site as well, you may be able to find what the problem is with you hard drive and read the advice on getting the data off of it too.

3 Questions about Data

Thursday, September 1st, 2016

Three questions in this post. All about data and it’s loss. The first question concerns a faulty Mac hard drive, the second an overwritten video tape, and finally a question about converting and reading data in an old format.

fixing a hard drive problemQuestion: I have a 1tb WD My Passport for Mac ext hd, last week out of nowhere it stopped showing up on my laptop (I always eject before unplugging). Went to Apple store and they said it might be a b tree failure?! It has lots of photos in it. Can they be recovered?

Answer: The b-tree is the system Mac’s use to store data on storage devices like hard drives. From experience, it’s very unlikely to be a problem with the b-tree, as the hard drive would still show up on your laptop. More likely is a hard drive problem of some kind. Is the hard drive making any different noises at all? You can find a good explanation of hard drive problems, including their symptoms in this hard drive diagnosis walkthru – http://data-recovery-tips.co.uk/hard-drive-diagnosis-walk-thru/.

Question: I have a video tape containing data that was accidentally overwritten. The video was at the beginning of the tape and the duration was around 30 minutes. When I re-wind the tape to the beginning I can see the very start of the overwritten video for a fraction of a second before it cuts to what overwrote it.

Answer: Oh dear, when data is written to video tape it entirely overwrites what was written underneath it. There is no chance of recovering this data. I is gone. I found this useful link explaining how camcorders work here http://www.explainthatstuff.com/camcorders.html.

Question: Do you have the ability to unload and export into either ASCII or EBCDIC, data provided in either AS400 SAV.OBJ or SAV.Lib format contained on a LTO5 tape? if so what is your pricing model and typical lead times and where does the conversion process reside as the data would need to stay within the EU.

Answer: EBCDIC code? Good grief, I haven’t heard that word for about 20 years, when it was an alternative to ASCII, I think ICL mainframes used to use it. LTO5 tapes are a little more recent and I know where to get those converted but I don’t know whether they support AS400 or EBCDIC formats.

More next time! Keep your questions coming!

So Many Hard Drive & Phone Problems

Samsung Galaxy S6 Factory Reset

my phone (Samsung Galaxy S6 edge) has performed an unexpected factory reset an I have lost all my pictures and videos. Do you think you would be able to recover them? If so, how much would it cost and how long does it take for the files to be recovered? Would this be performed at your London Lab (EC3V 9LJ) or will you have to send the phone away? What happens if you are not able to recover the files – is there a charge for the attempt?

WD Passport Not Recognised

My Western Digital My Passport 1TB external hard drive is now not recognised by either PC or Mac. When the drive is connected, the drive power light lights up and the drive makes a sound ( starts with the normal spinning disk sound but continues like a stutter ) but does not show any icon on desktop as an external hard drive on either my pc or mac. On PC it shows as an icon on my devices but ca not be opened to view any files. On Mac a message pops up with “The disk you inserted was not readable by this computer.”
No sensitive personal data is on the drive but the drive is nearly full with original photo RAW files i am in need of recovering. Thank you.

External Hard Drive Motor Busted

Basically my external hard drive motor is potentially bust or something is trapped as I dropped my hard drive 🙁 and well, I have tried an icy box and other external adapters as the hard drive is now out of its original case and another technician had tried to recover files but has been unsuccessful; he advised me about the motor and suggested some sort of forensic recovery. Please help, It has my life and university work on there.
I am in work until 5:30 so I am unsure if I can take a phone call.

iPhone Switching Off

The phone turned itself off and then back on again before showing 0 photos when i know i had over 15,00 very special and precious photos. Now the iphone wont update even using itunes and i cant extract the data and pictures even using paid software such as dr fone. As the data is so special i would pay anything to get them back and even pay if you can recommend someone who can do such a task.

Laptop Not Recognising Hard Drive

My laptop got stood on and after that it doesn’t recognise the hard drive. I tried reseating it myself. Didn’t work. It was taken to a shop and they weren’t able to retrieve my files. They suggested it get sent to a clean room in America, which I’m not willing to do. I would like a second opinion.
