Hard Drive’s Not Seen

Friday, April 7th, 2017

What advice do you tell someone whose hard drive is not working or is no longer recognised? My advice would be to get them to contact a data recovery company. Which data recovery company? Well my advice would be to read this blog as I do make several suggestions. Below are some questions I’ve received about data recovery.

lost your data cartoonI have an OCZ Vertex 2 that’s been working fine for 6 years (Win 10 connected to desktop with Gigabyte mobo). Having properly powered down my PC yesterday, upon booting this morning the SSD is not identified during BIOS loading.
I tried resetting CMOS; cycling the drive with power cable only; etc. but to no avail. Green led on the drive is lit solid (not red). I saw your note re Vertex 2 – has any solution been identified since then? Is it possible to move the memory chips onto another circuit board? I’d hate to lose years of precious data.

I have a Seagate ST1500DM003 external HDD, and doesn’t work. Maybe it burned the engine. I have a many more photos on this HDD. Can you help me recover the data?

Drive was working fine yesterday. no bumps or knocks to it. no damage. drive cannot now be seen by laptop os. sometimes seems to be working properly then not. no os on this drive as being used as a slave unit..
Can you provide an approx cost – only some dats is important – music files and various other >doc/Excel documents

WD HDD drive fails to boot. Had it removed and replaced, need the data from it. Is no longer starting up. I need to recover my files and save them elsewhere.

I was hoping I could have a WD Elements external hard drive (WDBU6Y0020BBK-01) assessed to see if any data could be recovered from it. It stopped working a couple of years ago and it has taken me a while to get round to sorting it out.
If I recall correctly the drive would not power up when plugged in but it did not appear on my computer. It may possibly have been an issue with the port on the drive being slightly loose. As it is usb powered it would often disconnect and reconnect it quick succession as a result. I am obviously no expert but I have been told it could potentially be a corruption issue caused over time by the cable being physically loose.
Would it be possible to have this looked at and what would be cost of assessment and the likely cost of repair (if it is repairable)?

WD Hard drive makes a clicking noise and not recognised by Windows. Have had this problem for the last couple of years. Was on the verge of giving up but today, file explorer opened for 5 seconds showing the contents of the drive. Are you able to help recover the data?

Phone and Hard Drive Data Recovery

Monday, March 27th, 2017

Readers of this data recovery blog will be familiar with all the different type of hard drive faults we report on. Below are some of the latest and I have no hesitation in recommending Data Clinic as the UK’s data recovery company of choice. Hard drive or phone fault, these are the people I recommend.

I have an external hard drive that was dropped onto the floor and is now defective.
It turns on and then clicks and buzzes. Another company tried to fix it to no avail but hopefully you have better technology. I’ve been recommended I try

iPhone Recovery (Data)
I drove off with my iPhone 5c on the roof of my car and it was run over by another car on the road. It was inside a leather wallet case and evidently, it was run over while lying flat. The phone itself is intact, but the screen is smashed, the home button destroyed and it will not charge or be recognised by my computer.
Due to a series of unfortunate circumstances, I do not have any back ups of the phone for the last 15 months and I am looking to recover the live photos and videos from the device as they contain memories of my young child. This recovery is my primary goal, any extra data recovered would be a bonus.

I dropped my hard drive 1TB and my computer is unable to read the contents of it.

Unable to turn on HP Pavilion G6 laptop PC (running Windows 10). Ran system diagnostics from F10 as it starts up. Results are a HDD “Short DST Check” failure. What are my options?

I have dropped my external hard drive on the floor and it cannot be read by the computer any longer. The hard drive makes a loud whirring noise when connected to the computer and there are some files that I would like to recover from it.

I’m having a problem with my portable hard drive which is WD My Passport. Due it’s full I think as according to disk utility on my Macbook Pro. My macbook pro is working great as new from nearly one year ago. When I plugged the passport drive via usb, I can feel the passport is spinning as like it’s working but not appearing up on desktop. I’ve tried to use first aid on the passport via Disk Utility and it said failed. I don’t know why its failed. I think it was because last time when I use the passport was when I transferred the large file of video editing into passport drive. When I plugged the passport on next use, thats how its started a problem as not appearing up on desktop as I’ve struggled and tried to find a way to make the passport to be mount on desktop to get access to the files on hard drive.
Also it is possible for you to email back to me instead of phone call? It is because I’m deaf so email is the best way for to communicate.

Laptop Drives not working

Tuesday, March 7th, 2017

My laptop fell to the floor after I had just put the lid down and it was going to sleep. Proceeded to try and login and it freezes on the loading screen for ages and doesn’t do anything. Run the diagnostics, the smart scan hard drive has passed but the short DST hard drive test has failed. Tried automatic repair and it says that the computer cannot be repaired with this link in the error message C:\\WINDOWS\system32\Logfiles\Srt\SrtTrail.txt
Then I tried to restore it to the point my computer suggested, it starts up again, but never gets past the loading screen.

The hard drive is an iomega 750GB. It was knocked off a shelf and now the power comes on but it will not connect to laptop. It sounds like its trying to start up but keeps failing.

My hard drive was dropped and now it is no longer detected and makes a buzzing noise when connected.

I have a Maxtor 3200 external hard drive which I haven’t used for many years. I am aware that the drive will not work on later versions of Windows, and have therefore tried to use it on an old Windows XP desktop computer. The drive is showing as not fully installing and therefore unable to be accessed. The indicator light on the drive goes from bright, to dull, to off as it flashes – I am not sure if this is how it used to flash or not. Could the data on this drive be retrieved?

I own an iPod Classic – It’s over 8 years old (I think) – All my music ended up being stored on this (after downloading CD’s onto old PC laptop which is long gone) – I’m trying to retrieve the music and know not to restore as this will delete music stored – Problem is iPod now saying need to restore to access – Can you help? Willing to pay as really don’t want to lose music – Thank you (I am based in Wimbledon)

3tb hard drive. I have opened to take a look and can see a clear scratch.
Just need image files and Lightroom backup files recovered – all else not required or wanted!
Is this a possibility and how much?

HDD’s Broken

Sunday, January 8th, 2017

I’ve received a large number of broken hard drives (HDD’s) lately and I sent them off to http://www.datlabsdatarecovery.co.uk/ to have the data recovered from them. I have a Seagate freeagent desktop external hard drive. This is suddenly longer recognised by desktop computer. I plugged it into my home laptop with same result. The Seagate box contains family photos and personal docs going back many years. I am hoping there’s a chance of retrieving these with your help? I live in Plymouth, Devon (120 miles from your Bristol office). Is this a problem?

I’m having trouble with a 2TB SATA external drive. The drive stopped working while attached to my computer. It is formatted MS-DOS. The drive spins up, but makes a quiet clicking noise. I’ve taken it from the enclosure and put it in another SATA enclosure and the same happens. I guess that means it’s a mechanical failure inside the drive, or on the board. It has some important data I would like to retrieve. Any chance you could give me a quote?

We have an MSA 2000 with two x 6 disk RAID5 volumes containing a number of VMware VMs. It is reporting multiple disk failures after a power cut.
We have a backup of the VMs via Backup Exec but the database is on a VM which is now unavailable because of the disk failures in the SAN.
We’re working on a workaround but as a plan b I wondered whether this is something you might be able to assist with.
We open for business again on 3rd Jan and must be fully operational.

Seagate external hardrive makes beeping noise and is not recognisable on my mac. Stopped working after I dropped it on the carpet from waist height. Power cable and transformer are working but hard drive doesn’t turn on so unable to access data. My EHD can’t connect to computer. Microsoft Help states possible malfunction. Done some research and could be down to overheating as the drive is stored inside a small drawer. Would appreciate if you could help me out.

I have a very old ibook G4 that will not start. Sometimes nothing happens when I switch it on but occasionally a blank blue screen will come on but nothing else happens.
I have photos on the machine that i would like to recover.
Can you estimate the cost of recovering photos from the laptop?

Some Phone and Hard Drive Enquiries

Wednesday, December 7th, 2016

This post is all about the topic of data recovery. Data recovery is what we need when our electronic devices become inaccessible and we need to retrieve the data that is on them. Data recovery usually involves the repair of the device (e.g.. hard drive or phone), before the data is recovered from it.

Toshiba usb portable hard drive. the socket has broken off the small mother board and fallen in to the casing. The hardrive itself should be functioning.if you connect to it directly. We need to remove the data from it.

I have a Samsung Galaxy S7 and factory reset has been done on it. I would like to recover the photos from the phone.

A phone data retrieval service I can recommend is http://phone-recovery.pen.io/

I would like to access the data and photos from two of my old laptops that have been broken a few years. Could you advise how much it’s likely to cost.

Fujitsu M2681SAMI have a Fujitsu M2681SAM 264mb 3.5, 50 pin SCSI LP Hard Drive out of a piece of outputting equipment for the printing industry. I can’t get the imagesetter to load the info off the H/drive and not sure if it’s the CPU board or the H/drive. I was looking to have the H/Drive tested, and the information transferred to another H/drive of which I could locate and supply if needed. I am based in North Birmingham. What help can you offer and what sort of costs would be involved.
If you could contact me with any information that would be appreciated.

i was wiping my laptop as i was giving it to a family member. http://www.macworld.co.uk/how-to/mac/how-reset-macbook-air-pro-imac-restore-your-mac-original-factory-settings-macos-3494564/
i used this guide to help. i had important University documents on the desktop. i hope to recover.
please do not call me if your services are costing over £400 like other competitors.

I recently took out and cleaned my five year old laptop and placed everything back the way it was. Long story short it would not boot I ran a start up test to see why and it froze. The computer nor the drive is responsive even when I put the drive in a working computer or vise versa

Hard Drive Issues and a Phone Problem

Friday, November 25th, 2016

I have issues with 2 drives. Segate external plug in, started clicking and now wont boot up. Second drive cable connection is very loose and i cant get that to boot up either. My external hard drive does not display data when connected to laptop.

Seagate hard driveIt’s data recovery from a Laptop, ASUS G551TW-CN080H-16GB. It’s a logical failure, rather than a physical drive problem.
The Laptop developed a problem with the power where it would not hold a charge and ran until it had no power left. As it was under warranty it was sent back to ASUS for repair. However they replaced the mainboard and recovered the operating system without backing up the files on the laptop, or reinstating the file index/table.

The laptop came with the hard drive partitioned as; C drive – for system files, D drive – for file storage, E drive – for file storage. The hard drive wasn’t replaced when the laptop was sent away for repair, and came back with the same partition configuration as above.
The hard drive is a 1 TB HDD / 7200rpm – SATA 6 Gb/s.

The files I want to recover were mostly on the D drive, with some on the E. The most important file types are video and photo, .avi, mp4, mts, mov, and jpg.
Data recovery software has been run on the machine once, and a lot of the photo’s and some of the video’s recovered. There are still a lot of video files which were not recovered.

I made a factory data reset on my Sony smartphone, and all my photos and contacts have been deleted.

London Data Recovery

Monday, November 21st, 2016

Here’s a question that came into us asking about the services of hard drive specialists Data Clinic Ltd. It sounds to us like the folks at this diy data recovery site may be able to help too, but if you want to use Data Clinic, their London address is on Lombard Street – EC3V 9LJ

Hello i’m a student living in London.
– I have a Seagate 1tb external hard drive which broke on the 12th of November.
– The light on my hard drive does not turn on.
– The hard drive isn’t recognized so therefore I can not access my files.
– When I connect it to my computer through usb it clicks for about 40 seconds and stops making any noise altogether.
-There isn’t a huge amount on the hard drive but it is of great value to me.
I am a student and I am working full time. I really am on a budget. I would like to think that this is a small job for ‘dataclinic’. If you could quote me the probable price and recovery time, that would be great.

wd blueAnd another quote question too:
I am looking for donor drive WD10SPCX (or just heads), do you have any? How much does is cost?

Our advice is to stay away from buying hard drives of the same model for data recovery purposes unless you are sure you know what you are doing. If fixing a busted hard drive by buying the same model and swapping the control board was all you had to do there wouldn’t be data recovery companies. So be careful as you’ll be wasting a lot of money.

The costs of data recovery can vary considerably depending on the type of drive – don’t forget there are SSD’s as well as HDD’s now!, and the fault with it – data problems, unresponsive drives, dead drives, noisy ‘clicking’ drives are all different faults that are fixed differently and varying in cost.

Computing Problems – November 2016

Tuesday, November 8th, 2016

My Sony Vaio laptop turns on saying the hard disk/drive was not detected. I do not know why as last time I used it worked perfectly fine. Please get in touch asap via email. I am free on Monday 31st so I can drop it then.

Seagate "Backup Plus" drivesI have an iPhone that is stuck on the Apple logo and won’t reboot or enter recovery mode so as to allow recovery of files. It is an iPhone 4S. I live in Switzerland. Do you offer a service whereby I could send the unit to you (Fedex) for you to do a diagnostic test? If so, could you send me a list of prices, or at least the price for a diagnostic test.
In this case, I’d be seeking to recover the photo files and the voice memorandum file in the iPhone dictaphone utility.

A seagate external hard drive is not responding when connected. Need to recover the data in the hard drive. Could you please give me a quote for this service. I am based in London.

About 27gb of photos and videos lost, from Europe trip between April and June 2016, stored on microsd card within Motorola G3 phone. Event occurrence in end June: Dropped the Android phone from bedside table height while connected for charging, and connected to wifi, onto soft carpeted floor. Microsd card malfunction possibly due to potential unseen/unaccepted Android system update, possibly initiated by being connected to wifi after a long time, or by the drop with charge (causing a potential short circuit).

I have a Toshiba External hard drive which doesn’t seem to be working, it turns on but doesn’t boot properly or appear on my computer. I’ve tried different power cables and USB cables but they don’t work. It usually makes a fast clicking noise and the light on the front turns blue but it’s staying red and not making the noise any more. Any ideas what’s happened? I haven’t dropped it or.moved it at all it just suddenly started doing his.

Questions about Broken Hard Drives

Friday, September 23rd, 2016

In this post we look at three example hard drive problems and give recommendations on identifying the problem and applying the solution to extract the data from the hard drive.

Is Hard Drive Repair Worth It ?
My external hard drive is clicking and not connecting to my macbook so I know it is broken, I do not want a data recovery if possible to avoid it as I’m just wanting the hard drive fixed. I am wondering if you’s fix external hard drives? Thank you.

It’s not really financially worth fixing a hard drive. As hard drives are so cheap to buy, it works out more expensive to fix them than it would be to buy a brand new one. So, if you don’t need to data recovering from your busted hard drive, just buy a new one instead. You’ll get a warranty with it too.

Hard Drive Not Being Found
I have a Seagate 1gb usb hard drive. The light is still lit up when connected to computer, I have brought a new lead just in case it was that, unfortunately it is not being found on any computer. What do I need to do to get the drive to work?

Buying a new lead was a good idea as sometimes that’s all the problem is. Now that you’ve done that and eliminated the lead it’s worth eliminating the external case. Remove the hard drive from the casing and hook it us directly to your computer using a USB to SATA cable. If that works then obviously the case is at fault. If the hard drive is still not being found then the conclusion is that there is a fault on the hard drive. There are some things you can do yourself to try and repaid your hard drive – go and take a look at the http://www.recover-deleted-data.co.uk/ web resource for some good tips of getting the information of off broken hard drives.

Getting the Data off a Packard Bell
I would like quote for the cost of recovering data off a Packard Bell Store & Save hard disk drive Model No H2D2U2 6948820100, particularly the family photos.

You don’t actually say what the failure with your hard drive actually is. Can you provide any more information ? In the above question I mention the Recover Deleted Data web resource – I recommend that you take a look at this site as well, you may be able to find what the problem is with you hard drive and read the advice on getting the data off of it too.
